Words, silence, civility

• Words

Each morning 3 to 4 men and often a woman do the crossword together.

Sitting beside each other, they speak in even tones. Out-loud curious, exploring, searching for the right words.

I listen, my coffee and I, gifted a moment of simplicity by civil, equable, voices.

One of them knows and teaches several languages including Latin. Each has a close affinity with where words come from, the history, the ambiguities. A couple speak a few languages. The café owners are from Argentina. Spanish words pop up between some customers. Cash only. No mindless cards to enrich billionaires.

My own tongue enjoys one of the delicious pastries made there, Café Bariloche, Glebe Point Road, Glebe, Sydney, Australia.

Not having to speak, just listen.  A way to start the day that works for me, wordless.

Thank you, generous Earth.
