Outbreak of democracy in Chippendale

After trialling a new ‘town hall’ way for citizens to meet in October, we citizens of Erskineville, Darlington, Chippendale and beyond are warming up to our voices and cleaning out our ears for the next one this month of November.

• Aaahh . . . the flower of democracy blooms in Chippendale, Sydney, Australia - join us for laughter, stories, plots and . . . HOPE!

We citizens will meet each month. As we go and you join us we’ll widen the topics, speakers and participants to those in Australia and overseas.

• We’ll be the mouse that roars . . . join us at home or in the room . . . tell your story, say your piece . . .

Instead of booking a hall, arranging chairs, and the ‘stuff’ needed for a public meeting our livestream event is easier and seems more effective. The first event had some raggy, tech-sad moments, but we’re getting better as we go.

Citizens and speakers may choose to be in the venue physically or join from their laptop at home or work.

Either way, speakers and citizens can listen, speak and share what is a very easy and also exciting, open and engaging new way to meet.

Forget the dull Zoom, etc experience.

Think of live crosses during TV news or current affairs programs. The images and sounds of the speaker and the guests are sharp to see and hear.

• Watch out. We read books. We do it in the road.

For the stay at home there is no cost. Just register and you’re ‘in the room’.

To be physically at the event as a guest there is a $20 registration fee. The registration fee is to pay for the tech folk and a drink at the bar if you want one (or two). Maximum of 20 people in the room at Knox Street Bar, Chippendale. Speakers who present ideas, stories pay nothing.

• First test run we truly had feet of clay as this n that did or did not work but, hey, everyone loved it . . .

There’s a chat screen for questions and comments from those at home.

Meetings are recorded so if the kettle boils or the oven bursts into flames at home or you missed something in ‘the room’ then as someone who has registered you can watch and listen again at any time by clicking on the link to the particular meeting. (But do put out the fire.)

The next meeting is:

  • Thursday 26 November

  • Start 7 pm, finish 8 pm

Agenda is:

• Yes, we want to bitch. But. We want and will go for solutions to where we live.

Registrations for being in the room physically or at home are here.

Please let us know of topics and speakers you would like at the next ‘town hall’ meeting to be held around mid December and for the next one in January 2021.

Seriously.

We are VERY open minded and have only one motive – to make our citizens voices heard on what’s important to us – garbage, food, environment, traffic, housing, gardens, business, the virus, local issues, climate change, inequality . . . . dancing in the street. GO US!!

One thing we’re keen on: solutions to problems. We expect to find solutions more easily by listening and seeing the world through the eyes of others.
